The University Police Department arrested USM student Velton Williams, 20, for the second anonymous threat that was posted on social media app Yik Yak Thursday, Sept. 25. The post indicated a “USM purge” would occur. Williams is charged with a felony offense of posting a computer threat to cause injury and is being held in Forrest County Jail. He is placed on interim suspension indefinitely by the university, according to a USM press release. University Police Chief Bob Hopkins said with the cooperation of Yik Yak and other investigative processes, the police was able to pinpoint the identity of the culprit and bring a resolution to the case. “I hope that this will serve as a reminder to anyone who posts comments on social media that nothing is anonymous,” Hopkins said in a USM press release. Report any suspicious activity to UPD at 601.266.4968.
