The Southern Miss volleyball team (8-9, 2-2 C-USA) is moving closer to .500 on the season following a three-set victory against Middle Tennessee State (4-11, 0-3 C-USA) on Sunday afternoon.

MTSU managed to jump out to an early lead in set one over the Golden Eagles, but the team eventually came out ahead. Down 8-6 at one point, the team went on an 8-1 run in the set to take control. MTSU tied the set up 26-26 near the end, but two MTSU attack errors helped Southern Miss come out with the 28-26 win.

In the second set, MTSU jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead. A subsequent 6-0 run by Southern Miss gave the Golden Eagles a lead in the set. MTSU tied the set up twice after the Southern Miss run, but the team held on for a 25-19 victory.

Southern Miss sealed the overall win against MTSU in the third set. Down 3-2 early on, the Golden Eagles went on a subsequent 8-1 run and maintained control for the rest of the set for a 25-18 set win and three-set sweep.

The Golden Eagles had 32 total blocks over the three sets against MTSU, becoming the second team in Division I in the past five years to record at least 21 blocks during a three-set game. The only other program to achieve this feat in that time span was Fresno State in 2017. Junior Catherine Repsher led all Southern Miss players with 11 blocks, while sophomore Chandler Marshall added nine.

Other statistical leaders of note include nine kills and 12 digs from senior Kylie Grandy, along with 23 assists and 12 digs from senior Sarah Bell. Bell is now 154 assists away from the No.1 spot for all-time kills at Southern Miss. Senior Alexis Coombs also contributed with eight kills on the afternoon.

Southern Miss will return to the court this Friday when they play Charlotte in the first game of a three-game home stretch. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
