The Kappa Delta sorority at the University of Southern Mississippi recently hosted its annual Shamrock and Run 5K, raising funds for Kids Hub Child Advocacy Center and Prevent Child Abuse America.
The event kicked off at 9:30 a.m. at the District on the USM campus, where participants checked in, received race bibs, bags, and shirts. The 5K race started at 10:30 a.m., with runners making their way through the USM campus. Kappa Delta members lined the route, cheering on participants with signs and words of encouragement.
Following the 5K, a 1-mile color run began at 11:30 a.m., with participants showered in colored powder as they crossed the start and finish lines. Winners of both races were awarded medals for first, second, and third place in various age categories. The event also featured vendors and live music.
Kate Guillory, Vice President of Events and Programming for Kappa Delta, was the director of the event. Through her position, she is responsible for planning and managing the sorority’s philanthropic efforts and other events involving parents and families.
“That means that I’m making sure that we’re hitting our fundraising goals and making sure that everything is planned for each event that our chapter hosts,” Guillory said.
Proceeds from the event will benefit Kids Hub Child Advocacy Center, a Hattiesburg-based nonprofit that supports child abuse victims in the Pine Belt region.
“My experience as VP events and programming has definitely been busy,” Guillory said. “But it has been rewarding to say the least, it’s been super fulfilling to grow my leadership skills.”
