After placing 14th in the Old Waverly Gate Collegiate, the Southern Miss men’s golf team traveled to Madison for the Reunion Intercollegiate tournament to close out the regular season.
Hosted by Ole Miss at the par-72 Reunion Golf and Country Club, the Golden Eagles competed against 11 ranked teams in the Golfstat Top 100 list.
On Monday, play was cancelled after 12 holes were played in the tournament. As a result, the tournament was cut from 72 to 36 holes. Junior Drew Kirby finished with the best score for Southern Miss on the day, shooting one-under par 71, followed by Casey Fernandez at 2-over par with a score of 74.
Trent Hillis finished three-over par, hitting one birdie, two bogies and one double-bogey with a score of 75. Kevin Brady finished five-over par 77 and Kevin Jorden shot seven-over par with a score of 79.
When play resumed Tuesday, the Golden Eagles finished the tournament tied for seventh-place with Central Arkansas. Overall, Southern Miss shot 297 and 307 in the first and second rounds, finishing 28-over par.
Kirby earned a career best three-over par, tying for 12th-place in the tournament and achieving his second career top 20 finish. With a score of 71 in the first round, Kirby marks his fifth round of par or better and sixth time in his career.
Junior Casey Fernandez concluded the tournament five-over par in 15th-place, earning him his second top 20 finish on the season and sixth in his career. The seniors, Trent Hillis and Kevin Brady both tied for 10th place, shooting ten-over par. Hillis recorded a 75 in the first and 79 in the second round while Brady hit 77’s on both of his rounds.
Sophomore Kevin Jorden shot a 79 in the first and 84 in the second round, tying for 66th-place in the tournament.
Mississippi State shot 12-over par to win the tournament. Vanderbilt came in second place, four shots below the Bulldogs.
The Golden Eagles will wrap up the season April 27-29 at the Conference USA Championship in Texarkana, Ark.
