As many fans at Southern Miss may or may not know, women’s basketball has undergone changes similar to football. Those changes include a new coach as well as new transfer players that followed Coach Bilderback from Louisiana-Monroe.
In the wake of the transition from the previous team that fans saw last year and years before, Bilderback and her team have gotten off to a hot start of 4-0, featuring one road win.
Besides the electric play fans can see in the Reed Green Coliseum from the Lady Golden Eagles, something else that can be noticed is the attendance.
The attendance that can be seen when the Lady Golden Eagles play, especially at home, does not match the product those players work so hard to give to the people that come to see them.
Your response to that statement may be something along the lines of “the men don’t have many people show up for them either.” To that, I say the men are not 4-0 and are not dominating the teams they are encountering.
For example, when the men played Tougaloo and beat them 93-57, the attendance of that game was 2,176 people. When the women’s team beat Blue Mountain 113-39 while breaking a program record for victory margin, scoring 110 points for the first time in the 21st century, putting up the sixth most points in school history, while scoring the most points the team has scored since 1995 there was only 1,407 fans in the stands.
Nobody is saying the men’s team is undeserving of fan support. This article simply exists as a reminder that the Lady Golden Eagles are deserving of support.
