On Feb. 4, schools around the nation made their contribution to the celebration of National Women and Girls in Sport day. Southern Miss’ contribution was bringing out the other women’s athletes at Southern Miss and recognizing them at halftime at the women’s basketball game versus James Madison.
As the teams – beach volleyball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball – were brought out, they were honored from oldest to youngest, oldest being women’s basketball, and youngest being beach volleyball. Each team had their own white t-shirt and their own signs they took pictures with.
If you were in attendance you would have seen a lot of the athletes who got recognized, cheering on their basketball bouncing counterparts. The game truly did bring a special feeling to the air in the Reed Green.
Women’s sports are sports that deserve to be valued just as much as men’s sports. This commemorative event showed that Southern Miss is on the progressive side of that debate.
However, the Lady Golden Eagles did fall to James Madison University in a valiant effort. At this point of the season, the Lady Golden Eagles have a limited number of home games left. Fans will be able to catch the Lady Golden Eagles at the Reed Green Coliseum on Thursday Feb. 12, at 5 p.m. versus Louisiana-Monroe and on Saturday Feb. 14 at 5:00 p.m. versus Texas State. Those games being the last home games on the season.
