The Golden Eagles faced off in a three-game set against Troy on the road. Friday’s matchup started out slow for both teams, with neither team scoring for the first three innings of the game. The Trojans broke the scoring drought at the bottom of the fourth with a double play to give them a 2-0 lead. After a scoreless fifth inning for both teams, Southern Miss tied the game at the top of the sixth inning after runs by Hannah Christian and Jolie Hays. With the game tied 2-2 going into the seventh inning, Christian hit her fourth home run of the season to send her and Nealy McManus to home plate and push Southern Miss ahead 4-2. The Golden Eagles held the Trojans to just one hit at the bottom of the seventh as they took the first game of the weekend.
Saturday’s matchup started with the Trojans getting on the board early as they led 1-0 going into the second inning. At the top of the second inning, Kinsley Gordon-Sivley tied the game up for the Golden Eagles after a sacrifice play by Madison Johnson. The Trojans managed to take the lead at the very end of the second inning to give them a 2-1 lead. A scoreless third inning led to back-to-back runs at the top of the fourth inning for Southern Miss. McManus and Julia Glasgow scored on back-to-back plays to take the lead back from the Trojans. Gordon-Sivley hit a single to right field at the top of the sixth inning, allowing Abbi Troquille and Carrie Green to round home plate. McManus scored one final run for the Golden Eagles in the seventh inning and led the team to the 6-3 victory.
In their final game on Sunday, both Troy and Southern Miss struggled to get runs on the board early in the game. It was not until the top of the fifth inning that Johnson hit a big home run to send her and Gordon-Silvey home to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead. But the Trojans returned with their home run at the bottom of the fifth as they took the 3-2 lead. With the momentum on their side at home, the Trojans went on to command the seventh inning with seven runs as they took the massive 10-2 victory over the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles return home Thursday for three straight matches against James Madison University.
