No. 22 Southern Miss completed a three game sweep of Texas State over the weekend at Pete Taylor Park, using timely hitting, strong pitching, and late game execution to finish a perfect Sun Belt Conference series. The Golden Eagles improved 28-12 overall and 11-7 in conference play.
Friday: Big Third Inning Sets the Tone
Southern Miss opened the series with an 8-2 win behind a six run third inning that broke the game open. Ben Higdon highlighted the inning with a three home run, while Davis Gillespie, Joey Urban, and Drey Barrett added key hits in a 12 hit performance. Grayden Harris controlled the game on the mound, allowing just two runs over 6 ⅓ innings with six strikeouts.
Saturday: Balanced Effort Clinches Series Win
The Golden Eagles secured the series with a 6-3 win on Saturday. Davis Gillespie drove in three runs and finished with two hits, while Joey Urban added four hits to pace the offense. Southern Miss also got home runs from Gillespie and Tucker Stockman to extend the lead late. Camden Sunstorm pitched six strong innings, and the bullpen held off a late Texas State push to secure the win.
Sunday: Walk Off Completes Sweep
Southern Miss finished the sweep with a 5-4 win in 10 innings on Sunday. Matthew Russo’s solo home run in the eighth briefly gave the Golden Eagles the lead, but Texas State tied the game in the ninth to force extras. In the 10th, Ty Long scored the winning run on a wild pitch after a walk, flyout, and single set up the situation. Southern Miss pitchers combined for a season high 17 strikeouts in the game.
Southern Miss returns to action Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Tulane at Pete Taylor Park in their final home non conference game of the regular season.
