Delta Gamma sorority is working to impact The University of Southern Mississippi campus and Hattiesburg community one good deed at a time.

As a part of the sorority’s first ever “Do Good” Week, members have committed to completing small acts of kindness for other people or the environment. These kind acts could be anything from lending someone a hand with their bags to volunteering with a local charity.

“We hope that the good deeds our members do on campus, like buying someone coffee at (Starbucks), buying someone lunch, helping someone study, opening the door, etc., will encourage others to perform small acts of kindness, whether that is on campus or in the community,” said Jennifer Barton, Southern Miss Delta Gamma president.

Kicking off the week on Monday, volunteers played bingo and spent time with residents at Wesley Manor Retirement Community.

Most of the week was spent doing acts of service for the sorority’s foundation, Service for Sight, which raises money for visually impaired people.

Monday through Wednesday, the members collected Campbell’s soup labels for various schools for the visually impaired across the nation, box tops for Mississippi School for the Blind and eyeglasses for The Hattiesburg Lions Club.

Donuts will be sent to various departments on campus Thursday as a thank you for the hard work that the faculty and staff do on campus. General acts of service and kindness are encouraged outside of these events through the “pass along the do good” part of the week.

Delta Gammas will pass out clothespins to those doing good on campus with the hope that they will pass it along to someone else.

“‘Do Good’ Week is about showing others the love we have for Delta Gamma, each other and the rest of our community through our words and (our) actions,” said Jordan Nettles, Delta Gamma vice president of foundation.

“We hope that we’ll be able to pass on the spirit of our motto, ‘Do Good,’ by just promoting acts of kindness, whether that’s participating in large community service projects or small everyday acts like holding the door open for someone walking behind you,” she said.

According to the sorority website, the Delta Gamma letters were chosen specifically to reflect the motto and objective of the sorority: “Do Good.”

Delta Gamma members hope the event will start a chain of good deeds that will extend outside of the Southern Miss campus to impact the world. For more information visit DeltaGamma.org.
