Carl White’s journey to becoming Mr. Southern Miss is the result of years of building a strong reputation through his involvement on campus. Growing up in Madison, he sought more meaningful contributions beyond high school activities, driven by a desire to make a lasting impact.
“I was popular in high school, but I felt my contributions were minimal,” White stated. “I wanted to reinvent myself at Southern Miss and become someone who made a difference.”
In addition to changing his own experience, White’s dedication to university involvement has improved the lives of people around him. He has cultivated contacts and gained leadership experience through involvement in a number of groups, both of which have been crucial in determining his future.
“My experiences have exposed me to diverse perspectives and challenges,” White stated. “Building strong connections with peers and mentors has opened doors for my personal and professional growth.”
While managing time and battling procrastination proved to be challenges, White learned to prioritize and take advantage of opportunities. He offers simple advice to his fellow students.
“Take risks and step out of your comfort zone,” he said. “Most of the time, the biggest rewards come from those scary moments.”
White’s influence goes beyond growth as an individual. His desire to improve underprivileged communities is evident through his community service projects, which include cleaning highways and mentoring middle school children.
“I want to show others that their current circumstances don’t define their future,” he added.
White’s efforts have not been overlooked. His faith in the effectiveness of involvement has been strengthened by the academic community’s recognition.
“Initially, I didn’t see myself in a leadership position, but being acknowledged for my work has changed my perspective,” he explained.
White attributes his success to his involvement in various organizations, including Campus Outreach, African American student clubs, and the Men of Excellence. His leadership role in Men of Excellence, in particular, served as a foundation for his later pursuits.
“The lessons I learned there have been foundational for everything I’ve done at Southern Miss,” he remarked, thanking these groups for their assistance and chances.
As he reflects on his journey, White emphasizes the importance of personal growth and community involvement. His story serves as a reminder that leadership is not about accolades, but about making a positive impact that extends beyond campus.
Looking ahead, White continues to embody the values of commitment and engagement, hoping his legacy will inspire others at Southern Miss.

Sounds like a young man who understands that leadership comes by deeds not words. I wish him the best in his journey.
