On Wednesday, Feb. 4, newly appointed head football coach Blake Anderson answered the media’s burning questions and here’s what fans need to know.
Upon the end of last season, as well as Coach Huff’s departure to Memphis, roughly 30 players graduated, 28 players left – 16 went to Memphis – and the Golden Eagles were left with 26 returners, only one of which being a starter. This inspired the Golden Eagle coaching staff to put the pedal to the metal and recruit heavily. Anderson also mentioned wanting to put an emphasis on wanting to recruit locally.
It’s no secret that Charles Huff transformed the general culture of Southern Miss football in his short time in Hattiesburg.
“The pressure is to be our best,” Anderson said in reference to what the pressure level is like anticipating coming after the season Huff had. “I expect us to win day one, and that’s saying a lot considering we don’t even know what team we have”.
Everyone knows the Southern Miss Golden Eagles have had a little trouble in their recent history, but Anderson made it clear he knows what the fanbase expects from him.
“I think I have to prove everyday that I’m worthy of the job,” he said.
As the Golden Eagle Spring Game approaches, tension is at an all time high. Everything is new and unknown. Therefore, fans must rally behind Blake Anderson and his new program. He said it himself, everyone has got to buy in. Just be patient, and see what the Golden Eagles have in store.
