Excitement filled the air at The Rock as Southern Miss football wrapped up spring practice with its annual Spring Game, giving fans a first look at what the 2026 season could hold. The event brought energy, anticipation, and a sense of renewal as players and coaches showcased their progress heading into the offseason.
Out of a 105-man roster, just 67 players suited up for the scrimmage, allowing for increased reps and opportunities on the field. The smaller group created a highly competitive environment, giving both returning players and emerging talent a chance to stand out. Coaches used the format to evaluate depth and identify key contributors as they continue shaping the roster.
While the action on the field drew attention, much of the buzz centered around expectations for the upcoming season. Fans in attendance expressed optimism about the program’s direction, especially with new leadership at the helm. Supporters pointed to last season’s strong start as a foundation to build upon, despite a finish that fell short of expectations.
One fan, Mason Baglio, shared his confidence in the team’s future, predicting a dominant run in conference play.
“They’re going to be the best team in the Sun Belt, undefeated, everything,” Baglio said. “I mean, last season, they started strong and didn’t end how they wanted to, but I think they have something to build on. That’s what’s most important: you want to see something to build on for the future. Especially with a new coach coming in, I have a lot of faith.”
The scrimmage featured a mix of offensive and defensive sequences, giving insight into how the team is developing on both sides of the ball. Coaches focused not only on execution but also on building unity among players to be successful in the fall.
Head coach Blake Anderson highlighted the importance of team chemistry as the program moves into the summer months.
“It starts at the top, being open, honest, and transparent with them and really creating a family environment where they know we care about them and talk more about things outside of football than we do inside of football,” Anderson said. “But time is important too.”
The summer will play a crucial role in developing that chemistry, particularly with new players joining the program. As spring football comes to a close, the Golden Eagles now shift their focus to summer workouts. Development, depth, and consistency will be key priorities as they prepare for the 2026 season. With renewed energy and growing confidence, Southern Miss looks ahead to the fall with high expectations and a determination to improve.
