USM’s art students have been hard at work all year—and now the campus community has the chance to see the results firsthand.
Starting March 24, the University of Southern Mississippi’s School of Performing and Visual Arts opened its annual Student Art Show, featuring juried work from students across the art and design programs. The exhibit highlights a wide range of creative expression, offering visitors a glimpse into the dedication, experimentation and talent students developed throughout the academic year.
The gallery showcases pieces in drawing, painting, printmaking, digital photography, ceramics, sculpture and graphic design. Each section of the exhibit reflects a different artistic discipline, yet together they create a cohesive display of student innovation. From intricate pencil sketches to large-scale sculptures and vibrant digital compositions, the variety ensures that every visitor can find something that captures their attention.
One of the defining features of the show is its inclusivity. The exhibit includes work from students at all levels—ranging from those who have just begun their artistic journey to students at advanced levels who are preparing to enter professional fields. This blend of experience allows viewers to see not only polished, high-level work but also the growth and exploration that come with learning a craft.
The pieces on display are selected through a juried process, meaning they are chosen based on artistic merit by faculty or guest judges. Adding an extra layer of prestige to the exhibition, as students must meet a high standard for their work to be included. For many, being selected is both an honor and a confidence boost.
Students who attended the show say the experience is both inspiring and motivating.
“I didn’t realize how much talent we had on campus until I walked through the gallery,” said sophomore attendee Maya Thompson. “Every piece felt so different, but you could tell how much time and effort went into all of them.”
Another visitor, senior James Carter, said the exhibit gave him a new appreciation for his peers.
“Seeing everyone’s work displayed like this makes it feel real,” he said. “It’s not just assignments anymore—it’s art that people can connect with. It honestly made me want to push myself more creatively.”
The Student Art Show is held every spring and serves as a celebration of the creative achievements of USM’s visual arts students. It also provides an opportunity for the broader community to engage with the arts and support emerging artists. For many students, it is one of the first times their work is presented in a formal gallery setting, making it a significant milestone in their artistic journey.
The exhibit is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will run through April 10 in the George Hurst Building. Visitors are encouraged to stop by and experience the creativity and hard work of USM’s student artists firsthand.
