Southern Miss Softball gave it their all in front of a record-breaking crowd on Tuesday, but they could not get past No. 3 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide, losing 5-2.
Despite the loss, Southern Miss Head Coach Brian Levin noted the positives of having a record attendance at the home match.
“It’s just incredible. It’s been that way since I’ve been here and it just continues to get better and better,” Levin said. “Alabama has such a good following… It was just a good atmosphere for the young ladies to play in.”
All 1,571 fans in attendance packed the stands with hopes of a competitive game and it did not disappoint.
After a scoreless first inning, Alabama’s Morgan Bloodworth hit an RBI single to give the Crimson Tide an early 1-0 lead in the second inning.
The Golden Eagles did not wait long to respond as Natalie Taylor hit a two-run RBI single to score Columbia Holeman and Hannah Borden, which gave Southern Miss a 2-1 lead.
After another scoreless inning in the third, the Crimson Tide tied the game in the fourth with an RBI single from Bailey Dowling to score Ashley Prange.
Alabama then took the lead in the top of the fifth with an RBI single from Ally Shipman to score Jenna Johnson.
Alabama added two more runs in the next two innings by RBIs from Abby Doerr and Prange, leading the Crimson Tide to victory.
The Golden Eagles prepare for a six-game road trip, starting against the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff this Wednesday.
