Southern Miss delivered a complete, three-game performance over the weekend at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field, using dominant pitching and clutch hitting to sweep ULM in Sun Belt Conference play.
The Golden Eagles (34-14, 16-8 Sun Belt) capped the series with a 7-3 victory Sunday, finishing off a sweep that featured a walk-off win, a record-tying strikeout performance and a balanced offensive finale.
Sunday’s game showcased Southern Miss’ ability to control the pace early and add on late. Ben Higdon led the offense with three RBIs, while Davis Gillespie and Matthew Russo each recorded three hits in a 12-hit effort. Drey Barrett added two RBIs of his own.
The Golden Eagles broke things open in the third inning, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring four runs with two outs. Barrett drove in the first run with an RBI single before Higdon followed with a two-run hit. Tucker Stockman capped the inning with another RBI single to give Southern Miss a 4-0 advantage.
Southern Miss added three more runs in the sixth, with Russo, Barrett and Higdon each delivering RBI singles to extend the lead to 7-1.
On the mound, Camden Sunstrom turned in six strong innings, allowing just four hits with no walks and five strikeouts. His only blemish came on a solo home run in the fifth inning as he earned the win.
The foundation for the sweep was built during Saturday’s doubleheader, where Southern Miss pitching dominated from start to finish.
In the opener, the Golden Eagles outlasted ULM 2-1 in 11 innings behind a clutch moment from Matthew Russo, who delivered a walk-off RBI double to score Davis Gillespie. Kyle Morrison provided the early offense with a solo home run, while Grayden Harris and Colby Allen combined for 16 strikeouts in a strong performance on the mound.
Southern Miss followed with another 3-1 win in the nightcap, powered by one of the most dominant pitching outings of the season. Camden Clark struck out 15 batters over seven innings, allowing just one run on three hits without issuing a walk. The Golden Eagles added 19 total strikeouts in the game, tying a single-game program record.
Across Saturday’s doubleheader, Southern Miss pitchers combined for 35 strikeouts, matching a school record and overwhelming ULM hitters throughout the day.
With the sweep, the Golden Eagles moved into sole possession of second place in the Sun Belt standings. The victory also marked their 20th home win of the season and extended the program’s regular-season winning streak in the month of May to 14 games.
Southern Miss will look to carry that momentum on the road next weekend as it travels to James Madison for a three-game conference series beginning Friday.
