Tulane rallied late to defeat No. 12 Southern Miss 7-6 Tuesday night at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium, using an eighth inning RBI single to complete the comeback in a back and back forth game.
Southern Miss jumped out early with a fast start. Joey Urban led off the game with a solo home run on the first pitch. The Golden Eagles added to the lead in the second inning with an RBI groundout from Lawson Odom and an RBI single from Ty Long. Kyle Morrison extended the lead in the third with a solo home run, and Southern Miss built a 5-0 advantage.
Tulane responded in the bottom of the third with a four run inning. Tanner Chun delivered an RBI single, while Matthias Haas added a two run single to cut the deficit to 5-4.
Southern Miss briefly extended the lead in the fifth on a solo home run by Matthew Russo, but Tulane kept answering. Haas hit his second home run of the game, Trent Liolios tied it in the seventh with a solo shot.
In the eighth inning, Tulane took its first lead of the night when Johnny Elliot reached and Tanner Chun singled him home for a 7-6 advantage. The Green Wave bullpen held on from there to seal the win.
Southern Miss finished with multiple home runs in the game but could not hold off Tulane’s late rally as Green Wave completed the comeback victory.
