The Southern Miss Golden Eagles dropped a 5-1 contest to the Southeastern Louisiana Lions at Pete Taylor Park-Hill Denson Field after a pivotal fourth inning swung momentum in favor of the visitors.
The game opened as a defensive battle, with both teams trading quick outs through the first two innings. Southern Miss starter Kros Sivley kept the Lions in check early, while Southeastern’s Luke Lirette limited the Golden Eagle’s offense.
Southeastern Louisiana broke through in the fourth inning behind a big swing from Brody Capps, who launched a two run home run to left center to give the Lions a 2-0 lead. The inning continued to unravel for Southern Miss as Southeastern added two more runs, timely hits and productive outs, extending the lead to 4-0.
The Lions added an insurance run in the sixth inning, capitalizing on walks and situational hitting to push the advantage to 5-0.
Southern Miss struggled to find consistency at the plate but showed signs of life in the eighth inning. Joey Urban reached base and later scored on a RBI single from Ben Higdon to cut the deficit to 5-1.
Despite the late push, the Golden Eagles were unable to rally further. Southeastern Louisiana sealed the game in the ninth inning, turning a double play to secure the win.
