Southern Miss softball gives up four home runs as they lose big to state rival Ole Miss in Oxford.
Battling on the road, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles played against the ice-cold Ole Miss Rebels, winning just one of their past seven games. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles were coming off a 1-2 series against Texas State.
The first inning started off well for Southern Miss. An error by the Rebels and two walks allowed the Golden Eagles to load all three bases. Kinsley Gordon-Sivley hit a single and allowed Madison Johnson and Carrie Green to score, giving Southern Miss a 2-0 lead. At the bottom of the first, Ole Miss came out scorching with two straight runs followed by a three-run homerun as they snatched a 5-2 lead back from the Golden Eagles.
After a quick three outs for Southern Miss, the Golden Eagles gave up another two-run home run as the deficit grew to five. A hitless third inning for Southern Miss allowed the Rebels to hit another home run to extend their 8-2 lead. Nealy McManus tried to push the Golden Eagles back into the game in the fourth with a two-run home run. Julia Glasgow scored off a fielding error and Southern Miss went into the bottom of the fourth down only three.
But after another home run by the Rebels and a scoreless fifth inning for both sides, the Golden Eagles had only two innings remaining to overcome their four-point deficit. The Rebels forced a quick three outs and scored another three runs in the sixth inning to put this game away. Southern Miss lost the game 12-5.
The Golden Eagles return home for a weekend series against South Alabama starting Friday at 6:00 P.M. These three games will be their final home games of the regular season before they head to Lafayette for the Sun Belt Championships.
