Southern Miss’ softball team beat Alcorn State at home to keep their win streak alive.
Alcorn State traveled to Hattiesburg to take on the red-hot Golden Eagles. Southern Miss is coming off an undefeated weekend in the Hub City Classic. The Golden Eagles started the first inning strong, sending the Lady Braves back into the field without a single hit. At the bottom of the first, they took an early lead after back-to-back runs by sophomores Hannah Christian and Abbi Troquille.
The next three innings were dry for both teams, with Southern Miss only getting two hits of the innings. At the top of the fifth inning, Alcorn State tied the game after back-to-back runs. The Golden Eagles stepped back up to bat and got five straight hits, leading to Nealy McManus and Madison Johnson getting two more runs for Southern Miss.
The Golden Eagles kept the Lady Braves scoreless in the sixth, allowing Julia Glasgow to score one more run for Southern Miss as they pushed their lead to three. Going into the seventh inning, pitcher Madilyn Graham stepped up to the pitchers mound and sealed the game for Southern Miss. She ensured the victory with a hitless final inning for the Lady Braves.
Madison Johnson led the game for the Golden Eagles with a game-high three hits and one run. With this win, Southern Miss pushes their win streak to seven, which is the longest winning streak in the Sun Belt Conference. It also pushes them to 14-8 on the season, which ties them with Louisiana Tech for fourth place in the Sun Belt Conference.
Southern Miss travels to Jacksonville, Fla. for the Jacksonville University-University of North Florida Tournament this weekend.
