Southern Miss’ men’s tennis team swept their two-match weekend set to push their home record to a perfect 4-0.
The Golden Eagles hosted two matches to close out February against University of New Orleans and Norfolk State. Southern Miss dominated the match versus UNO on Friday. Duo partners Kale Mize and Jay Temming pulled off a quick 6-2 victory in their doubles match, followed by Olle Noltorp and Ritabrata Sarkar with their own 6-2 victory. With the first point of the match belonging to Southern Miss, the Golden Eagles turned their attention to their singles matches.
Mize quickly earned another point for the Golden Eagles after a quick two-game singles set. Jose Murariu followed up Mize’s victory with a big time comeback in his third game of the set, earning the Golden Eagles their third point of the match. Saheb Sodhi battled in this match and after a close 6-4 victory in his third game of the set, he sealed the victory for Southern Miss with the fourth point of the match. Noltorp and Sarkar won their matches in easy two-game sets to increase the lead even further as Southern Miss started their weekend with a 6-1 victory.
The next afternoon, Norfolk came to Hattiesburg to play the Golden Eagles. Once again, Mize and Temming secured their doubles match in a dominant 6-2 victory. Sodhi and his duo partner Eric Perkowski won their own match 6-2, giving the Golden Eagles another doubles victory.
Continuing his hot streak of games, Mize earned another point for Southern Miss after a 6-1 victory in his second game of the set. Norfolk bounced back with a quick two-game set victory to earn their first point of the match. Despite the pushback from Norfolk, Sodhi and Noltorp won their singles matches in just two games and sealed another victory for Southern Miss. Sarkar secured his own victory in three games and the Golden Eagles finished the game with a 5-2 victory. This pushes their record to 5-4 on the season, and marks the team’s third straight win.
The March 1 match against College of Charleston was cancelled, giving the Golden Eagles a full week off before their next matches on March 8 in Baton Rouge versus Southern University and Louisiana State University.
