Southern Miss capped off another dominant weekend at Pete Taylor Park, defeating North Alabama 9-2 to complete a three-game series sweep.
The Golden Eagles improved to 14-2 on the season, marking their weekend series sweep to open the 2026 campaign. North Alabama fell to 7-9.
Southern Miss jumped on the Lions early Sunday afternoon behind the bat of Davis Gillespie. Gillespie put the Golden Eagles on the board in the first inning with a two-run home to right-center field, his third of the season. The blast followed a leadoff walk by Joey Urban.
Moments later, Higdon added to the early momentum with a solo home run to left, giving Southern Miss a 3-0 lead. The back-to-back home runs marked the program’s first since Carson Paetow and Drey Barret accomplished the feat against Georgia State on April 19, 2025.
Gillespie continued his big day in the second inning, delivering an RBI double to extend the lead to 4-0. Southern Miss broke the game open in the seventh inning. After consecutive walks to Matthew Russo and Gillepsie, a sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position. Drey Barret drew another walk before Kyle Morrison cleared the bases with a triple to right-center field. Caleb Stelly followed with an RBI single to cap the four innings and push the lead to 8-0.
Gillespie and Morrison each finished with two hits and three RBIs to pace the Golden Eagle offense. The offensive performance on Sunday followed another strong showing Saturday, when sophomore left-hander Grayden Harris delivered a dominant outing in a 6-1 Southern Miss victory.
Harris tossed a career-high seven innings while striking out a career best 13 batters to improve to 3-0 on the season. The Central, Louisiana native allowed just one run while retiring 15 consecutive batters during one stretch of the game.
North Alabama’s only run came in the seventh inning when Cayden Sheffield drove in Wes Walker with a double to right field. Walker attempted to score earlier in the inning but was thrown out at the plate, ending the Lions’ only real scoring threat.
Harris fanned the side twice and recorded at least two strikeouts in five different innings.
With the sweep, Southern Miss continues its strong start to the season and remains undefeated in weekend series play.
The Golden Eagles will return to action Tuesday when they face Ole Miss in a midweek matchup.
