USM baseball player injured in conditioning session Thursday

USM senior baseball player Michael Gilbert incurred a head injury during a team conditioning session on Hattiesburg campus Thursday morning, according to a USM sports press release. He was taken to Forrest General Hospital and is currently being transported to University Medical Center in Jackson. Gilbert is listed in critical, but stable condition.

According to the Hattiesburg American Twitter account, Gilbert was struck in the head by a log during a conditioning drill that took place in M.M. Roberts Stadium. Three players were carrying the log, one lost his footing and the fell on Gilbert. Bill McGillis, Southern Miss director of athletics, said trainers were there and reacted quickly.

Gilbert, a native of Saucier, Mississippi, plays infielder for the Southern Miss Golden Eagles baseball team.

“Michael has been under great care with doctors at Forrest General, and we know that will be the case at UMC as well,” said McGillis in a USM sports press release. “He is in our prayers.”
